男が妻子とともに帰る前日、村では葬式が一件あった。
There was a funeral in a village on the previous day when a man returns with wife and children.
かぐや姫が死んだのだ。
Moon Princess died.
数珠を握って寺へ出向くと、祭壇の中央には二十歳前後の美しい娘の遺影が飾られてあった。
When the rosary was grasped and it went out to the temple, in the center of an altar, the picture of the late him of the beautiful daughter around 20 years old was decorated.
「家中やさがししたけど、あれしか写真が残ってなくてなあ」
"Ienaka -- although search is carried out and being cooked, only in that, a photograph remains -- て -- なあ"
と村の者は言う。

となりに座った老人が話しかけてきた。
The old man who sat next has addressed.
若いころは大工をしていたというだけに、でこぼこと迫力のある手の持ち主だ。

「かぐやの婆さまが人間だったころの写真だよ。キレイだったねえ」

人間だったころというと？　男は目で問いかけた。

「失恋して毎晩月を見て泣くようになる、そのまえのことよ。俺ぁあのころ、惚れてたね」

かぐや姫になってしまった老婆に寝たきりの母親がいたらしいことを思い出して、男はほかに身寄りがあるのかと尋ねてみた。
The bedridden mother made the old woman who is Moon Princess result, it was, things were remembered, and the man inquired whether there would be any other relative.
もと大工は首を振った。

「そんなものはいやしねえ。ふとんに寝ていたのは、あすこに飾ってあるあの写真よ」

「そうでしたか」

男は前かがみに立ちあがり、焼香の列に加わろうとして気がついた。

「なんだい」

「あのお婆さんの遺品の中に、絵本がありませんでしたか？　白い月の虹が描いてある。あれをぜひお棺にいれてあげてください」

老人は手を振った。
The old man shook the hand.
「おおそうだった。そのつもりで持ってきてはいるんだ。よけりゃ棺に入れるまえに眺めて行きなよ」
"-- おお -- that was right It has brought with the intention. It watches, before avoiding and putting into りゃ棺, and it goes, and is なよ."

老婆が最後まで手元においた絵本の中には、墨で描かれた月の虹がかかっている。
Into the picture-book which the old woman set at hand to the last, it has cost the rainbow of the moon drawn in India ink.
粗末なつくりでお世辞にも美しいとは言いがたい。
It is hard to tell a compliment that it is beautiful by poor structure.
すすけたぼろ紙のうえで、それでも虹は月長石のようにぼうっと光っているのだった。
On soot beam rag paper, the rainbow had still shone vacantly like moon feldspar.

　今回のエキサイト君で笑えたのは、最後に出てくる「虹がかかる」という表現。これまで何気なく見逃してきたけれど、"it has cost the rainbow"の"cost"は、「製品開発にかかるコストは」とか言うときのコストだということに気がついた。いくらなんでも「費用がかかる」というときの「かかる」に訳すというのはねえ。

　数珠がロザリオっていうのは、あまりにもピンとこないので辞書をひいたところ、「仏教徒のロザリオ」という表現がありました。こっちの方がいいかなあ。

　意外に難しかったのは、「前かがみに立ちあがる」という表現なのです。"slouch"というのはズバリこれをひと言で表す単語らしいんですが、「だらしない様子で」「崩れた姿勢で」「猫背で」さらには「堕落する」なんて意味もあるそうです。西欧人はいすに座るのが普通ですから、ことさら前かがみに立ちあがるのはとってもだらしのないことらしいです。
　日本人が法事の場で前かがみに立ちあがるのは、正座の習慣があるからですよねえ。どうやったって、どっこらしょと前かがみにならないと立ちあがれないし、座っている人の間をすり抜けるときには姿勢を低くするのが礼儀ってことになっています。前かがみという単語をさんざん調べたんですが、どれもこれも「不作法で大儀そうで、こんな格好で立ち座りする奴はいただけない」みたいなニュアンスがあって、いけませんや。
　さんざん悩んだすえ、「うなだれながら立ちあがる」という表現ならどうか、と思いつきました。とくべつ悲しんではいなくとも、うちらは葬式でそうしますから。これぞ天啓！　……かどうかは分からないけれども、考えつくのにとっても時間がかかったので（まる１日！）嬉しいです。
　ここでまた問題発生。「立ちあがる」を"stand up"として、"He hung his head and stood up to queue for offering incense"（焼香の列に並ぶためにうなだれて立ちあがる）と書くとします。"stand up to"は「耐える」という意味になるんだけれども、だいじょうぶかしら。心配になってきたので、ほかに「立ちあがる」という表現がないかどうか探しました。"get up"は起床するという意味だとばかり思っていましたが、立ちあがるという意味にも使えるそうですわ。んじゃ、これで決定。

　今日の成果です。

となりに座った老人が話しかけてきた。
The old man who sat next has spoken to him.
若いころは大工をしていたというだけに、でこぼこと迫力のある手の持ち主だ。
As might be expected of someone who was a carpenter in his day, his hands was rough and powerful.
「かぐやの婆さまが人間だったころの写真だよ。キレイだったねえ」
"That is a photograph at the time of Moon Princess's having been a human. She was beautiful."
人間だったころというと？　男は目で問いかけた。
"What meaning is the time she was a human?" He asked by the eyes.
「失恋して毎晩月を見て泣くようになる、そのまえのことよ。俺ぁあのころ、惚れてたね」
"It means before she began to look at the moon and sob every night. I had fallen in love with her at that time."
かぐや姫になってしまった老婆に寝たきりの母親がいたらしいことを思い出して、男はほかに身寄りがあるのかと尋ねてみた。
The man remembered that the old woman who had became Moon Princess seemed to have the bedridden mother, and he asked him if the mother had any relative except for her.
もと大工は首を振った。
A one time carpenter shook his head.
「そんなものはいやしねえ。ふとんに寝ていたのは、あすこに飾ってあるあの写真よ」
"She had no such thing as mother.It was the photograph put there that was lying down in bedding."
「そうでしたか」
"I see."
男は前かがみに立ちあがり、焼香の列に加わろうとして気がついた。
He hung his head and got up to queue for offering incense, then he had noticed.
「ああそうだ」
"Oh, well..."
「なんだい」
"What?"
「あのお婆さんの遺品の中に、絵本がありませんでしたか？　白い月の虹が描いてある。あれをぜひお棺にいれてあげてください」
"Isn't the picture-book in her belongings left by the departed? It is a book with which white moonbow was drawn. Please put it into her coffin by all means."
老人は手を振った。
The old man shook his hand.
「おおそうだった。そのつもりで持ってきてはいるんだ。よけりゃ棺に入れるまえに眺めて行きなよ」
"Oh, yes. I brought it with the intention. If you like, watch it before putting it into a coffin."
老婆が最後まで手元においた絵本の中には、墨で描かれた月の虹がかかっている。
Into the picture-book which the old woman kept at hand to the last, a rainbow of the moon drawn in India ink arched.
粗末なつくりでお世辞にも美しいとは言いがたい。
It was poor quality and couldn't be said beautiful by any standard.
すすけたぼろ紙のうえで、それでも虹は月長石のようにぼうっと光っているのだった。
In the stained rag paper, the rainbow had still been shining dimly like a moonstone.

　すっげえ悪文の見本みたいな英語小説ですねー。間違っても英米人には読んで欲しくないと思う一方で、むりくり読ませてみたい気もします。
　どこまで意味が通じるか、それは神のみぞ知る！
　と言いたいところだけれども、英語文化圏うん十億人には一目瞭然の世界。
　悔しかったらおまえらも日本語で小説書いてみろよ！　なんて、あさっての方に向かって中指をおっ立てたりしちゃう於來なのでした。
