　荒れてさびれた庭のようすは薄闇でも見てとれた。縁の廊下に月明かりが反射してぼうと光る。腰をおろすとひんやり心地よく、かすかな草のざわめきが耳を打つ。
The situation of the yard which was ruined and became desolate has also grasped thin darkness. Moonlight reflects in a marginal passage and it shines with ぼう. if the waist is taken down -- ひん and り -- it is comfortable and noise of faint grass strikes an ear
「ここは本当に月がよく見えますね」
"Can the moon be clearly seen here truly?"
「はい……」

「月で虹がかかるのですか」
"Does a rainbow start to the moon?"
「かかります」
"It starts."
老婆はそう答えてから少し考え、
An old woman considers a few, after answering so.
「かかるという話です」
"It is the talk of starting."
と言い直す。
It restates.
「わたしは絵でしか見たことがありません。真っ白な虹がかかるということです」
"I have seen only with the picture. I hear that a pure white rainbow starts."
「ほう」
"Way"
「とてもきれいな絵でした。子供向けの絵本だったのに捨てられなくて、今でもそれを持っています」
"It was a very beautiful picture. It is not thrown away although it was a picture-book for children, and even now, it has it."
「ロマンチストなんですね」
"Are you a romanticist?"
身じろぎの気配があった。
There was a sign of movement.
「そんな誉められたものではありません。月の虹を見るために、こうして夜は月の出ているあいだじゅう目を覚まし、お天道さまのうちは眠るのです」
"It is not such a praised thing. In order to see the rainbow of the moon, in this way, night wakes up [ じゅう ], while having come out of the moon, and Mr. 天道's inside sleeps."
　二人はそろって月を見あげた。よく冴えた十五夜だ。男は急に
Two persons looked at and raised the moon together. It is the well clear night with a full moon. A man is suddenly.
「ああ、うさぎが見える！」
"Oh, a rabbit is seen!"
と叫んだ。
It cried.
「本当にもちをついているように見えるんですねえ。今日はじめて見ましたよ。子供のころはいくらその気で見ても見えなかったのに。こりゃあでっかいうさぎだなあ」
"-- rice cake is attached truly -- as -- being visible . It saw for the first time today. However it might see by the mind, it is that it was not visible as a child. こりゃあ -- it is a huge rabbit -- "
「それは良かったこと」
It is were [ it ] "good."
老婆は声をあげて嬉しそうに笑った。
The old woman raised voice and laughed joyfully.

　“手を伸べる”とか、月が“見える”とか、なんてことのない表現で引っかかりまくった。月がわたしたちによってクリアに見られる、なんて訳文はあんまりだと思って四苦八苦。visibleという表現を思い出すのに１時間もかかっちったい。
　“ぼうと光る”にも泣かされた。あちらの人って、ぼんやり光るって感覚をあんまり愛してないのね。光ると言えばピカピカ、キラキラ、チカチカ、ビカッ！　なんかそんな感じの言葉が多くて、派手なの（泣）。さんざん調べまくってgleamという単語に行き当たったんだけれども、やたら長文になったので、“月明かりがぼんやり反射していた”で妥協。“薄闇でも”という表現が思いつかなくて、“闇の中であるにもかかわらず”、なんて堅苦しい言葉で検索してしまった。
　そのほか、“かすかな草のざわめきが耳を打つ”が単に“草がさわさわと音をたてた”になっちゃったり、“少し考え”が“何かを考えて”になったりと、妥協のオン・パレードだ。

　“月で虹がかかる”の、“月で”が分からん。by the moonなのやらwith the moonなのやら。とうとう“月明かりの中で”（in the moonlight）にして、逃げの手を打ったりもした。“身じろぎの気配があった”（He sensed the sign that she moved.）にいたっては、通用するかどうか分からないぞー。

　最後の挫折は“子供のころはいくらその気で見ても見えなかったのに”だ。“いくらその気で見ても”見えなかった“のに”とかって、こういう何気ない口語体がもうダメ〜!!　“何度も試したにもかかわらず、わたしはそれを見ることができなかった”なんていうベタな日本語を突っこんで翻訳させました。
　意外だったのは、“ロマンチストなんですね”というセリフに、翻訳プログラムがきちんと主語を補ったことだ。なんでもItにするくせに、なんでココだけyouだと分かったの？

　くたくたに疲れたけれど、今日の成果です。
　副詞がやたらと多いんだけれども、どこに入れたらいいもんか。きっと間違いだらけだぞー。

縁の廊下に月明かりが反射してぼうと光る。
Moonlight was reflecting in the passage of the veranda dimly.
腰をおろすとひんやり心地よく、かすかな草のざわめきが耳を打つ。
He sat down there, and the passage was cool and comfortable. The grass rustled.
「ここは本当に月がよく見えますね」
"Here, the moon is visible so clearly, isn't it?"
「はい……」
"Yes...."
「月で虹がかかるのですか」
"Does a rainbow arch in the moonlight?"
「かかります」
"Yes, It dose."
老婆はそう答えてから少し考え、
「かかるという話です」
と言い直す。
After answering so, she considered something, and restated.
"I've heard It did."
「わたしは絵でしか見たことがありません。
"I have seen it only with a picture.
真っ白な虹がかかるということです」
It said that a pure white rainbow arched."
「ほう」
"Really?"
「とてもきれいな絵でした。
"It's a very beautiful picture.
子供向けの絵本だったのに捨てられなくて、今でもそれを持っています」
I can't throw it away though It's a picture-book for children, and even now, I have it."
「ロマンチストなんですね」
"You are a romanticist, aren't you?"

「そんな誉められたものではありません。
"It isn't such an admirable thing.
月の虹を見るために、こうして夜は月の出ているあいだじゅう目を覚まし、お天道さまのうちは眠るのです」
In order to see the rainbow of the moon, in this way, I stay up at night while the moon is comeing out, and while the sun is comeing out, I sleep."
二人はそろって月を見あげた。
They looked up at the moon together.
よく冴えた十五夜だ。
It was really clear full moon.
男は急に
「ああ、うさぎが見える！」
と叫んだ。
Suddenly he exclaimed.
"Oh, there is a rabbit in the moon!"
「本当にもちをついているように見えるんですねえ。
Sure it seems that it makes rice cake.
今日はじめて見ましたよ。
I see it for the first time today.
子供のころはいくらその気で見ても見えなかったのに。
But as a child, in spite of having tried again and again, I couldn't see it.
こりゃあでっかいうさぎだなあ」
What a huge rabbit!"
「それは良かったこと」
"That's good."
老婆は声をあげて嬉しそうに笑った。
She laughed joyfully.
